Behind the scenes of a small business @MyHollyHouse
This will vary from person to person but I thought I would give you an insight into the running of a small business.
Here is a little background, I have been running My Holly House for two years, in that time I’ve also experienced two very diffucult HG pregnancies and suffered with ill health but happily I have my two little girls, Zelda and Wilma, and all that is in the past. A lot of my ideas are still written down waiting to be realised, I had to put them on the back burner during my pregnancies as I was not physically able to create them BUT now I am ready! I can’t wait to kickstart my small shop journey and document it all here so you can come along for the ride.

In those two years I was absolutely determined to start working on something I am passionate about and that is creating whimsical designs to inspire young minds. I have reached over 4,000 Instagram followers, over 1,100 Etsy sales and gained many, many 5 star reviews! I couldn’t be prouder of how hard I have worked to achieve this, and trust me it has been hard.
Ask any small shop owner and they will tell you that 80% of that hard work isn’t always making the item but instead all the other bits behind the scenes. That includes working on designs, photographing, listing and marketing the product. The stock checks, social media, markets, fears around ordering new types of products and planning a launch.
It isn’t always those physical things that are hard though it can also be difficult to have good time management, drive and energy and not to suffer from imposter syndrome. Am i good enough? Do people like my products? Will my new items sell?
Running a small shop isn’t an easy option you play every work place role, from designer/maker to the guy that deals with delivery, marketing, admin, finance and more!
The other side of this though is the chance to work from home and around my children, meeting like minded people with a passion for handmade and also meeting so many of you in real life at events. It’s hard work but it’s my dream job too. Drawing, painting, editing my designs is the best part of the job alongside talking to you. To see someone else love your art truly is an amazing feeling and it never gets old.
So for me those are the best bits, there are plenty of them… and the hardest part is photography and admin! But we can’t love everything can we? Work hard enough and I might be able to outsource those parts one day – haha!

Would you like to run your own small shop? If so what is stopping you?
